Description
This seminar will discuss the future program at the LHC. After the present program will be completed, when about 300 fb-1 is collected by the experiments, a simple continuation of the operation of the machine becomes less exciting. Studies are already made for upgrading the LHC, beyond its presently expected performance. Two scenarios are will be discussed: - Upgrading the luminosity by a factor 10, ie. 10^35 cm-2s-1 - Upgrading the total energy to 28 TeV, ie 14 TeV per beam This seminar will discuss a possible path for such upgrades and particularly the additional increase in physics reach that can be gained with such upgrades. It turns out that for essentially all scenarios of new physics, the upgrade of the LHC will bring something new. Prerequisite knowledge: Physics lectures in the summer student programme
