e-Research: Meeting new challenges

Europe/Zurich
Welsh e-Science Centre, Cardiff

Welsh e-Science Centre, Cardiff

Description
This free event will introduce the possibilities and infrastructures for e-research at campus, national and international levels. Research is increasingly carried out by collaborations enabled by the Internet. These collaborations may be within a University, between institutes within a country, or be international. A typical feature of such collaborative research enterprises is that, by building with the infrastructure and software of grid computing, they share very large data collections and very large scale computing resources. The term e-Research is used to describe research undertaken in this manner; the term e-Infrastructure refers to a spectrum of developments that will underpin research and learning in the future. The goal of the technologies underpinning e-Research is to enable people to work together on more challenging projects and to achieve better results. e-Research technologies are increasingly being applied in many domains, far beyond the bounds of the early adopters who were in a few scientific disciplines. Why e-Research? “Our Age of Anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s jobs with yesterday’s tools” Marshall McLuan. Therefore it is critical to ensure that researchers have the right tools and resources to take on the challenges of research now and in the future. The purpose of this event, organised jointly by National e-Science Centre and Welsh e-Science Centre is to inform decision makers, researchers and systems management about the possibilities that are arising, here in Wales, across the UK and internationally. Key topics will include: An overview of e-Research Infrastructure Campus Grids e- Research Infrastructure at Cardiff University Welsh e-Science Centre and the UK picture International e-Research Infrastructure Successes already achieved at Cardiff Key questions to be answered will include: Which organizations/researchers might be interested in e-Research techniques? Why might they be interested? What services are available in Wales for those who are interested? There will some demonstrations and a chance to put any questions you have to the experts. Welsh e-Science Centre The Welsh e-Science Centre was formed at the Cardiff University in April 2002 to bring the huge technological advance associated with e-Science and Grid Computing to public and private sector organisations throughout Wales and South West England. It is one of eight such centres across the UK. The concepts of the different aspects of e-Infrastructure are explained, including networks connecting resources of data and computation; Grids that enable these resources to be perceived as "virtual computers"; tools that support collaboration. The impact that e-Infrastructure is beginning to have on research and learning is described with emphasis on the enabling of collaboration and the potential for multi-disciplinary research. The talk sets the context for the remainder of the day, which explores e-Infrastructure at different scales - the campus, nationally and internationally.
