EGEE: Introduction to Grid Computing with the LCG-2 middleware

Europe/Zurich
DESY, Hamburg

DESY, Hamburg

Ruediger Berlich, Christopher Jung, Andreas Gellrich, Mathias de Riese
Description
The lecture introduces the topic of Grid Computing on the example of high energy physics. Through presentations and hands on trainings the participants will gain knowledge about the LCG-2 middleware, the common grid environment of all four experiments of the upcoming Large Hadron Collider. Although developed in the HEP-environment, LCG-2 is also of more general use. For example, Biomedical applications are pilot users of the LCG-2 middleware. The project also provides essential contributions to the European Union grid project EGEE (\"Enabling Grid for ESciencE\"). The perspectives of this project and the technical background of the corresponding middleware gLite will be discussed.

Topics covered by the lecture include:
  • Introduction and motivation for Grid Computing
  • Historical development of Grid Computing
  • Standards in Grid Computing
  • Grid and Web Services and the Global Grid Forum
  • Various grid projects: The European Data Grid (EDG), LCG, AliEn, gLite and EGEE
  • Detailed introduction to the components of the LCG-2 middleware and their functionality
  • Hands-on training in LCG-2 (basic principles of job description, job submission and data management)
  • An example application (high-energy physics data analysis) using LCG-2 and the ROOT toolkit
  • Grid Applications
  • Introduction to the next-generation EGEE gLite middleware (based on LCG-2), its components and functionality
